Comprehensive Eye Exam

A comprehensive eye exam at Wilson Eye Care Center checks the health of your eye internally and externally. One of our highly-trained doctors will use slit lamp biomicroscopy to evaluate the structure and health of the cornea, conjunctiva, lids, lashes, anterior chamber and internal lens of the eye. With special lenses the doctor will then look even deeper into your eye, into the anterior vitreous and posterior pole which is called your fundus, or the back of your eye. The retina is inspected for signs of disease like hypertensive retinopathy, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, tumors, macular degeneration, and many others.

Neurologically, the doctor will check your pupils and nerve / muscle relationships of gaze and direction. Then he or she evaluates the optic nerve appearance which can show problems such as pressure in the brain leading to a swollen optic nerve (papilledema) and pseudo tumor cerebri which may occur in younger teenage females.

The refraction or checking your prescription is when the doctor prescribes your glasses or contacts.

At the end of the exam, the doctor will check your ocular pressures and in many cases dialate your eyes. The doctor can then photograph your eye digitally. This way you will have a baseline medical record of your eye health to compare to every year and catch anything that may be developing.
